EMBA Rankings 2016: How Important? How heavily should you weigh the ranking of an EMBA program according to organizations like U.S. News and World Report?
According to U.S. News and World Report rankings, based on 2016 compilation of the 2015 statistics, the top U.S. EMBA programs are:
1 University of Pennsylvania (Wharton), Philadelphia, PA
2 University of Chicago (Booth), Chicago, IL
3 Northwestern University (Kellogg), Evanston, IL
4 Columbia University, New York, NY
5 New York University (Stern), New York, NY
6 Duke University (Fuqua), Durham, NC (tied for #6)
6 University of Michigan—Ann Arbor (Ross), Ann Arbor, MI (tied for #6)
8 University of California—Berkeley (Haas), Berkeley, CA
9 University of California—Los Angeles (Anderson), Los Angeles, CA
10 University of North Carolina—Chapel Hill (Kenan-Flagler), Chapel Hill, NC
11 Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Sloan), Cambridge, MA
Other schools in the Top 20 included USC - Marshall (#14), University of Virginia - Darden (tied for #14), the University of Texas - McCombs (#17) and Cornell University - Johnson (tied for #20 with Southern Methodist University - Cox).
Candidates should always be wary of a short-term ranking versus a proven long-term brand, and they should consider schools in light of each of these factors. Remember that a school ranked relatively high in one year might be ranked in a middle range the next year, but the brand of the overall school has been established over time and should influence your perception of the school notably. Stated another way, rankings can change drastically from year to year; they can even vary greatly based on which organization performed the ranking (U.S. News and World Report vs. Bloomberg Businessweek, for instance). But, the overall brand and prestige of the top MBA programs do not fluctuate as much, therefore the prestige and brand of the school should be weighed heavily when considering EMBA programs.
For example, U.S. News and World Report does not rank MIT’s EMBA program in the top five programs, but we at
MBA Admit.com think very highly of the program and expect it to continue to climb in the rankings. Our clients are equally impressed with the program and it is high on their list of target schools. Moreover, judging from the caliber of candidate we see applying to the MIT EMBA program, we are certain the caliber of student in attendance is quite high. If matriculating there, you will be impressed with your classmates!
When considering top EMBA programs, we urge our candidates to bear in mind also how powerful the business school’s alumni network will be for them. This should be considered together with considerations such as the recent school ranking, the school’s prestige and the curriculum.
