EMBA Acceptance Rates: 2016 ReportThe Executive MBA path has developed excellently over the past few years, aided by technology, and the EMBA option has grown tremendously in popularity over the past decade. While 10 years ago, Wharton offered one of the few EMBA programs of great repute, today candidates have a large number of outstanding programs to choose among – from Booth, Kellogg and MIT to Yale and Cornell. The EMBA programs offer flexibility in their in-person attendance requirements and are taught by outstanding faculty. The programs are now wonderful alternatives for candidates who do not want to leave a fulfilling job or established family situation in order to gain an MBA. Many EMBA programs require only once-a-month in person attendance while others require only a few weeks in-person while offering virtual classes in satellite cities in the months in between.
We at
MBA Admit.com are often approached by candidates as they are choosing their ideal EMBA program, and they ask whether it is difficult to gain admission to top EMBA programs. After all, the acceptance rate at many of the top full-time MBA programs can make one shudder, ranging anywhere from 6-22%. This means that 94% of all candidates to some select full-time MBA programs are rejected! Those are very difficult odds!
According to U.S. News and World Report, based on 2016 compilation of the 2015 statistics, these were the acceptance rates to the top U.S. full-time MBA programs:
Stanford University, Palo Alto, CA: 6.1%
University of California—Berkeley (Haas), Berkeley, CA: 13%
Columbia University, New York, NY: 18%
University of California—Los Angeles (Anderson), Los Angeles, CA: 19.8%
University of Pennsylvania (Wharton), Philadelphia, PA: 19.8%
New York University (Stern), New York, NY: 20%
Northwestern University (Kellogg), Evanston, IL: 20.6%
Duke University (Fuqua), Durham, NC: 23.1%
University of Chicago (Booth), Chicago, IL: 24.4%
What about EMBA programs? If you surf the Internet and check the websites for the top EMBA programs, you will find that this information is much harder to find. Yet, some observers guestimate that in some years up to 70% of all applicants to Wharton’s EMBA program are rejected. The top EMBA programs are in demand.
One must also consider that, unlike in full-time MBA admissions, within the EMBA admissions process college performance means less and professional success can mean much, much more. The field of competition is therefore wider, because more applicants have an easier time demonstrating professional success alone than they would have had demonstrating both professional and academic success, as required at the full-time MBA level. Presenting a great, distinguishing application is all the more important.
As you prepare your application, remember that some types of applicants are at disadvantages and must work hard to present their case for admission through their applications. For example, if you are a foreign national you may face a very competitive pool of other applicants from your region of the world and you will need to present a compelling case through your essays and recommendations about why the admissions committee should choose you. If you are from an overrepresented industry like banking, you will face the same challenge: you must distinguish yourself and present a compelling case for admission. Some top MBA programs will tend to gravitate toward candidates from Fortune companies such as Apple, IBM, Samsung, Exxon, Bank of America, etc. So, if you are an entrepreneur and your business is relatively small, you will need to make certain to convey to the admissions committee the value of your work experience.
What does all of this mean for the candidate aspiring to gain admission to a top EMBA program? You should make sure that you put great effort into preparing your application. The quality of your essays and recommendations will be very important. Also, when applying to EMBA programs, it is a good idea to submit applications to more than one EMBA program to increase your odds of securing an admission to a program with which you will be happy.
