Is it possible to prepare a successful application to Columbia with only weeks to go before the June 1 deadline for the Friday-Saturday EMBA program? Yes! If you are just beginning to get your application together, this is not very unusual. The typical EMBA applicant has a highly demanding career and may also have a family, so their free time is limited. There is sometimes a tendency, in those circumstances, to put off preparing an EMBA application, even when you are certain you want to apply! What can you do to get the application together if you only have weeks to go?
Get Your Standardized Test ScoreColumbia is one of the EMBA programs that requires a standardized test score in order for you to apply. Traditionally, this has meant you must present a GMAT or GRE score. But – good news for you! – Columbia is now also accepting the new Graduate Management Admission Council’s Executive Assessment exam. This is good news because the exam is designed to be taken by EMBA candidates who typically do not have much time to prepare for a standardized test. You should not need to spend nearly as much time preparing for it as you would for the GMAT or GRE.
So, make sure to take the Executive Assessment exam, the GMAT or GRE so that you can present a complete application by June 1. Even if you take the relevant standardized test but don’t do well, you should not necessarily abandon your efforts to proceed with an EMBA application. The admissions committees of the top EMBA programs know that EMBA candidates are more advanced in their careers and thus very busy, and therefore they usually show some flexibility in accepting less-than-ideal scores, such as a 620 on the GMAT exam.
Recommendations and Company Sponsor LetterWith only weeks to go, two additional things you should set in motion as early as you can are your efforts to secure two recommendations and a company sponsor letter. Recommendations can make or break your efforts to secure admission. Approach your recommendation writers and get them “on board” for writing for you. Also contact the relevant party in your company who will write the company sponsor letter, because Columbia will want to know that your company is willing to give you the needed time on the relevant Fridays off in order to attend their program. The required sponsor letter for Columbia must confirm this “time” sponsorship, but no financial sponsorship is required.
Create a timeline Even if you will only be applying to Columbia’s EMBA program and not additional programs, you will want to set out a plan for when you will complete your essays, resume revision and application form. Each of these should get solid attention from you so that they present the best of your achievements and credentials in a way that compels the admissions committee to believe that you are an outstanding choice for their class.
Begin writing!Start writing your EMBA essays. The EMBA application is considered your “marketing package” and you want your essays to be outstanding. You should make sure to approach your essays in a highly strategic way, making sure there is excellent content in each essay that helps to shine a light on your achievements, credentials, uniqueness and strengths. The admissions committee should get a very strong sense of where you are heading in your career and you should strive to ensure that the way you present your long-term and short-term goals is working for you in the admissions process.
Compose your resume and application formYour resume should serve as a quick snapshot of your achievements, skills and credentials. The admissions committee should be able to review it and determine on the basis of its contents that you could be an excellent student in their program. The application form should be presented with care. Make sure to include your most compelling credentials and take the time to write very thoughtful and impressive descriptions of your current and prior jobs.
