Still Time to Meet Cornell’s EMBA Deadline (late June)? Is it possible to prepare a successful application to Cornell with only weeks to go before the late-June deadline? Yes!
When should you submit the application? As soon as possible, because Cornell employs a rolling admissions process. This means that Cornell reviews your application as it is received and will be offering admissions to some candidates each week between now and late-June. The sooner you apply, the more seats still available in the program. Thus, your odds of gaining admission will be higher. Even if you apply very late in the rolling process, however, if Cornell feels you are a great candidate, they will consider you for admission for the next program start date rather than reject you on the basis of application timing alone. That is great news!
What to Do to PrepareIf you are just beginning to get your Cornell application together, you are not alone. The typical EMBA applicant is very busy with career and family. Now that you are serious about applying, here are some steps you should take.
No GMAT Requirement, No Company Sponsor Letter! You will be happy to know that Cornell does not require a standardized test in order for you to apply, so you do not need to present a GMAT or GRE score. This has many candidates jumping for joy. This leaves you free to focus on the key components of the application that will determine your admissions success: your application essays, recommendations, resume and application form. You also do not need to secure a company sponsor letter.
Recommendations With only weeks to go, you should make solid efforts to secure two recommendations. You can also submit an optional third recommendation.
Recommendations can impact your admissions outcomes substantially. You want to make sure your recommendation are truly outstanding. Approach your recommendation writers and get them “on board” for writing for you. Explain to them the great benefits the program will allow you to bring your company. If necessary, supply the writer with a list of your achievements and credentials that can help them write a strong letter for you.
Set target deadlines to ensure progress Even if you will only be applying to Cornell’s EMBA program and not additional programs, you will want to set out a plan for when you will complete your essays, resume and application form. Each of these plays an important role in shaping the admissions committee’s perceptions of whether you are an excellent EMBA candidate or not. You should create your own deadlines for when you will complete initial drafts, when revisions will occur, and when you will ideally submit your application. Try your best to stay on track so you are not cramming the work at the last minute.
Write, write write! Start writing your EMBA essays and write with intention! The nature of Cornell’s EMBA application essays – and the questions about your leadership style and teamwork – are designed for Cornell to assess if you will be the sort of professional who contributes excellently to class learning. Be sure to present thoughtful and insightful responses that persuade the admissions committee you have wonderful experience to draw on in order to enrich their learning environment. As you respond, you will also want to skillfully highlight some of your most compelling achievements, credentials and strengths. The admissions committee should get a very strong sense of where you are heading in your career – and you should strive to ensure that the way you present your long-term and short-term goals is working for you in the admissions process. The EMBA application is considered your “marketing package” and you want your essays to be outstanding.
Use your resume and application form as key tools for your admissionAs you prepare your application, also make sure to give attention to your resume and application. Particularly if you are a candidate who has some weaknesses in your profile – such as a lackluster undergraduate performance, frequent changes in jobs or a gap in employment – you should take efforts to ensure your resume and application channel attention to the many other credentials you have that indicate you have been successful and have possess skills.
