Is it possible to prepare a successful Wharton EMBA Round 1 application if you only have weeks before the deadline? Yes! Many candidates have had their eyes on the Wharton EMBA for months, but with a high-demand job, they often cannot find the time to study for the required standardized test (GMAT or GRE) or to compose the required essays. Therefore, they continue to put off preparations until the deadline starts to approach. If this sounds familiar, you are in good company. But don’t worry, assuming you have your GMAT score or will be taking it soon, you can certainly put together a winning application if you plan and execute well.
Here are the top steps you should take to prepare before the Wharton Round 1 deadline arrives:
1. Take the required GMAT or GRE test. It is rather common for an executive candidate to have very little time to prepare for these exams, so if you end up with a score in the 600s, don’t despair. At
MBA Admit.com, our typical successful Wharton EMBA admit has a score between 610 and 660. With an outstanding application, it is very possible to persuade the admissions committee that, based on your strong record of professional success and record of handling quantitative work, you will be able to excel in their program
2. Approach recommendation writers. We place this high on the priority list because many recommendation writers will have restricted availability to write your recommendations, given the demands of their own careers. Make sure you have approached your recommendation writers and get them “on board” for supporting your application and composing stand-out recommendations. Let your recommendation writers know about the deadline date and when you will need them to submit their recommendations. Try to help them understand what the ideal content is for your recommendations so that the recommendations are a very strong support for your candidacy.
3. Revise your resume. An application resume is somewhat different from a job resume. Be sure to review your resume with a fine-tooth comb and make sure it conveys the information that EMBA committees most value, showing your leadership and teamwork skills and ability to bring great impact through your work. Once you have refined your resume, you can send it in to Wharton and schedule an interview.
4. Research the Wharton EMBA program in depth. Scour the Wharton EMBA website, chats, webinars and blogs, and reach out to alumni members or current students. Draw on what you learn as you write your essays. Be prepared to also draw on some of this information in your interview.
5. Think through your long-term and short-term goals. You should refine your written statements about your long-term and short-term goals. You want both your long-term and short-term goals to work for you as great assets in the MBA admissions process. You will also need to convey these goals effectively in the Wharton interview.
6. Begin drafting! Start writing your MBA essays. The MBA application is considered your “marketing package” and you want your essays to be outstanding.
7. Schedule your Wharton interview. Unlike many other programs, Wharton typically holds the admissions interview before your deadline. Remember, this is the real interview – there will not be another interview after you submit your application. So, you want to give a very refined resume to the committee that is tailored for an EMBA application and will position you well for the interview. You also want to rehearse your responses to typically asked EMBA admissions questions beforehand, so that you go into the Wharton interview confident and prepared.
8. Finalize your essays and application, and ensure the recommendations are submitted on time.
Throughout this all, take steps to create a timeline for yourself so that you can finish all elements of the application in time. Your essays will likely need multiple revisions, so allot time for that. You don’t want to miss deadlines because you failed to pace your work.
