MIT EMBA: 2 Weeks to the March 9 Deadline – How to Make It This year, MIT changed its EMBA admissions process to include “hard deadlines” by which you should submit your application and “decision dates” by which you will receive a reply. Most candidates want to avoid submitting an application by the final deadline in May because they know that, by then, MIT may have already allocated most of the seats for the upcoming EMBA class.
With only two weeks to go, is it possible to make the early March deadline? Yes! For MIT, you do not need a standardized test score. As for recommendations, many top EMBA programs allow the recommendations to come in a few days after the deadline, which gives you extra breathing room. So, your main, immediate tasks are to put together outstanding essays along with an excellent resume and org chart by the deadline – something that can be do-able.
Consider these steps:
•
Essays. Begin to draft your essays. Some candidates can draft on their own, but if you find you are expending too much time drafting your responses, you can seek the support of a reputable consultant who can help you outline your essays so that you draft the ideal content from the beginning and do not need extensive re-writing. For MIT, just beware that their essay topics are geared to weed out candidates who do not have the right quality of experience. So, choose your examples with care!
•
Resume. Revise your resume so that it is the best application resume possible. You want the resume to be a highly effective snapshot of your candidacy that makes the admissions committee want to admit you from the beginning. Remember, there is a difference between a job resume and an application resume, so make sure to add in the relevant credentials that the admissions committee values when admitting candidates.
•
Recommendations. Begin to work with your recommendation writers. Give them solid guidance about what sort of topics on which to focus and examples of your impact and leadership at work.
•
Org chart. Make sure to put together an organizational chart that presents your role in the most favorable light – showing direct reports, indirect reports, dotted line relationships, and executives to whom you report. (Also pay adequate attention to how you describe your work and employers on the application form.)
