MIT EMBA: What Makes the Interview Process So Challenging?
Of all the top U.S. Executive MBA (EMBA) programs, MIT’s EMBA admissions interviews are among the most demanding. MIT’s invitation-only interview process requires two back-to-back interviews with different interviewers, usually one of whom is on the Admissions Committee (sometimes both are Ad Com members). Compared to other top EMBA programs, MIT focuses more heavily on
behavioral questions designed to assess a candidate’s depth and breadth of leadership experience, leadership and business knowledge, and professional impact. Candidates may be asked to describe how they handled difficult workplace challenges, showcasing their managerial expertise and demonstrating skill in communicating extemporaneously (“on their feet”).
What are some examples of behavioral questions? Here are some examples from actual MIT EMBA interviews:
How do you motivate your team? What methodologies do you follow?
Tell me a situation where you took ownership of a new initiative.
Tell me about a time you dealt with a difficult client and how you turned things around. In general, it is a much more challenging interview style, even for the seasoned leader. Candidates with fewer years of work experience or less managerial experience often struggle in this sort of interview if they have not prepared well. So, be sure to prepare excellently so you can deliver outstanding responses to behavioral questions.
