hi,

background: 4 years tech background, will be starting at top 5 MBA program in the fall.

i am interested in getting into investment banking, but so far have had more success securing interest from management consulting firms rather than banks.

my question: will a M/B/B internship help me secure full-time investment banking offers? or should i just try to get IB internship offers first (because i am essentially a career changer)? i've read on this forum that if you are a career changer, it is critical that the internship be in the targeted field...

If you want to get into investment banking, I don't see how anything could be more appropriate than an investment banking internship. An M/B/B internship would be a great opportunity, but you should stay true to yourself and follow your interests.

Current/past students around here can probably tell you plenty about the recruitment process for both consulting and banking.

Both are kind of lock-in jobs from the internship. McKinsey is a good feed to HF though, Bain has its PE arm that feeds from the firm at large.

Initial interest from firms due to your background does not actually mean you have any better chance of landing an internship. I know people who got on plenty of closed lists, had interest from firms but didn't ultimately land an internship in that field. If you want to do IB you should try to do an IB internship especially because from what I understand it is very difficult if not impossible to get a full-time IB offer without an internship. The same isn't true for consulting - they tend to hire more for full time than interns. I do, however, recommend against going for both IB and MC as the interview process for each of these is quite intense and it would be quite difficult to do both well.
