In a certain company, 50 percent of the male staff members are above 35 years old, 60 percent of the female staff members are above 35 years old, 42 percent of all the staff members are above 35 years old. What is the proportion of female staff members in this company?

This one can't be done. It's not possible to have 50% of the men and 60% of the women be a part of a certain category, but then say that the combined of both is only 42%. The combined should be somewhere between 50% and 60%.

let the number of males = x
let the number of female=y
we need to find y/(x+y)
male above 35 = 0.5x
female above 35 = 0.6y
people above 35 = 42% of population
0.5x+ 0.6 y = 0.42 (x+y)
0.5x + 0.6y = 0.42x + 0.42y
0.08x = -0.16y which is impossible.
