A firm produces 2 types of items A and B and sells them at a profit of $2.50 on item A and $1.00 on item B. Each item is processed on 2 machines M1 and M2. Item A requires 1 hour of processing time on M1 and 3 hours on M2. Item B requires 3 hours on M1 and 1 hour on M2. How many items of each type should be produced each day as as to maximise his profit, if he operates his machines for at most 12 hours a day? Also find the maximum profit.

smc, where did you get these problems? Linear programming is not part of the GMAT.

A friend gave me a practice book on the entrance tests for MBA in India. I got it from there. Was not aware that linear programming is not on GMAT, sorry about that. I could have saved myself some time. Can you delete this question?

It's fine. Just stick to GMAT material. I know India has a different CAT exam and I believe its math is somewhat more difficult :? Even the string of quadratic questions+inequality that you previously posted were not GMAT type :)

Very true. Maybe people wanna try their hand at these "odd" questions (if within the subjects tested, of course), which may pop up on GMAT if you are in the 95-100 percentile. I agree with you, you won't see these questions if you are below the 700 band.

Maybe I misunderstood this one but I have the feeling you can manage it without derivative forms. The pb is symmetrical and there are only two types of products...

IMO max profit is reached in producing 3As and 3Bs, which represents 10.5 USD.
