My approach:
Let the number of staff = 100
From the problem it is understood that,
(64 percent of them have salary less than $5000)
36 members salary is > 5000
60 percent is more than $4000
40 members salary is < 4000
24 members salary is between 4000 - 5000
(100-40-36=24)
Here, 11 members get 4300 & 5 members get 4900: Rest 8 members salary is unknown.
assuming 'any value' for the salaries of these 8 members in the range 4000-5000 doesn't alter the median since the median is the 50th and 51st average.
when the data is arranged in ascending order 50th and 51st terms are 4300,4300 respectively.
Hence Median is 4300$.
