Hi everyone,
Been lurking here awhile, but am hoping I can gain some insight and perspective from everyone else on the board here...
I took the GMAT for the first time today and got a 640 (33Q 44V). This is well below my practice test scores (shown below) so I'm not really sure what happened. I felt really strong through the AWA (scored 6's on gmat write practices a few days before the test and am thinking i scored the same ehre) and IR (got a 7, which is about where I was hoping to be). I definitely started to feel a bit fatigued at the break but then thought i was okay through the quant. Normally my issue is running behind on time and I was actually ahead through the ~1/3 mark, so I'm wondering if I may have been going too fast at first and missing problems and just wasn't able to recover. Then came the Verbal section - which felt okay, but I ended up in the 98th percentile which is the best I've ever done by a couple percentage points, so I'm not really sure what to think.
I'm not really sure to go from here. I have been studying very diligently for the past ~2 months, with more on and off studying for ~4 months prior to that (due to other things coming up/work/procrastination). My weakness has definitely always been Quant but I felt I had really improved over the last couple months. I've been using Magoosh as well as the GMATPrep tests. I have the manhattan books and was using those for the first few months but didn't seem to be gaining much improvement from those.
Here's my practice scores:
9/10 GMATPrep Exam 1 - 680 - 44Q, 39V - really my first practice test after buckling down - timing was a big issue here as I had to guess on approx. the last 6-7 quants.
9/17 GMATPrep Exam 2 - 700 - 44Q, 41V - better on Verbal, still not really nailing timing on quant as I was guessing a lot towards the end
9/24 GMATPrep Exam 1 (retake) - 750 49Q, 44V - obviously retaking inflated my scores but really was just trying to focus on getting my timing right
9/30 GMATPrep Exam 2 (retake) - 720 48Q, 41V - took throughout the day while at work, obviously inflated a bit again, just more trying to focus on timing
In between tests I was reviewing the test problems and doing practice problems on areas where it seemed like I was struggling (Number Properties, Inequalities, Rate/Motion, etc.) for ~1-2 hours on weeknights and ~4-6 hours on weekends.
Looking for advice on a couple of areas:
1. What do you guys think went wrong today? While I wasn't expecting to show up and have a 48-49Q score, I was pretty confident I would be in the 40-44 range. Yet I ended up with a 33 (30th percentile, yikes!). Like I said, I didn't feel like I was drawing blanks during the test, but maybe that's just because I was doing <600 level problems the whole time? Also, it just seems odd that I was at or above my peak scores in all other aspects of the test but so low on quant...any thoughts?
2. Where do I go from here? At this point I have worked through most of the Magoosh materials/practice problems and OG13. While I feel like I have a solid understanding of the concepts, am I just not on the right level yet? Not sure how to get there from here aside from just rereading the Manhattan books/rewatching the Magoosh videos. I've been drilling problems for a month and felt pretty confident...I'm not sure what caused the breakdown today. From what I've read, the GMATPrep tests are pretty representative of the real thing (and would agree with this having gone through it today), so I'm not sure why I was so far off?
The goal has been to apply round 2 and I am shooting for that ~700-710 score, so ideally I'd like to retake as soon as possible. Any ideas on what my strategy should be to tighten up my quant in that time?
Any help/insight/advice/tips you all could provide would be very much appreciated.

Sorry to hear about the score. Do you think you were mentally tilted on test day? One of the exercised I tried to practice most was to emulate test conditions. My real test was at 8:00AM (no alternatives), so I would always wake up at 5:30am, grab some coffee, and do a few practice problems to get warmed up before taking a timed practice test.

Hi, I would suggest downloading the free gmatclub math book and making sure you are familiar with all of the concepts in it. If you are, maybe try out some of the free CAT tests that are offered online (Kaplan, Veritas, the Economist, Grockit, etc). Probably just do the quant sections, unless you feel the need to refresh on verbal, although it seems like you are quite proficient in that area. +
If you are able to get your score up to the low/mid 40's, try out the MGMAT Advanced Quant book, then GMAT Club quant tests
Keep an error log and make sure to revisit all problematic areas until you intuitively understand the underlying concepts and solution. Good luck!
