Hey guys,
Can anyone help me simply this fraction in a quick method? I'm using traditional simplifying techniques and am wondering if there is a easier way around this?
1/2 + 1/3 + 1/4
1/2 (multiply top and bottom by 3) + 1/3 (multiply too and bottom by 2) = 3/6+2/6= 5/6+1/4
5/6(multiply top and bottom by 4) + 1/4 (multiply top and bottom by 6) = 26/24
I individually devised each by 2 in long division to get 13/12.
Is there an easier way to do this?

Hi mate!
yes it is.
look at the denominators
2, 3, 4.
what is the LCM of these numbers? 12!
now, 12 is 2*6.
1/2 transforms into 6/12
12 is 3*4
1/3 transforms into 4/12
12 is 4*3
1/4 transforms into 3/12
6+4+3 = 13 - numerator
since denominator is 12, we have 13/12
pretty easy, don't you think?
I suggest that you try to find the LCM of all the denominators, then transform everything in the same format.

Your second step could be done more quickly, even if you don't want to try to combine all three of the fractions at once. Notice that 6 and 4 can both be turned into 12, rather than 24. 5/6 = 10/12, and 1/4 = 3/12, giving you 13/12 directly.
