When a certain tree was planted it was 4 feet tall. The height incresed by a constant amount each year over the next 6 years. At the end of the 6th year, the tree was 1/5 taller than it was at the end of the fourth year. By how many feet did the height of the tree increase each year?

x=2/3 ft

hmm..good answer, i t was a reading error on my part.
seeing your explanation.. now it makes sense.

i intepreted it as 4+6x = (4+4x) + 1/5, which is wrong

You're right! Misinterpreted the question, just added 1/5 to 4+4x!!!

Hey Prof: Can you explain something here.

I see that (4+6x) = the total height of the tree today

Then you set this equal to?

(4+4x), which equals end of 4th year?

+

1/5(4+4x), which is end of 6th year?


That doesn't seem to make sense to me, so I guess I'm not following...

height at the end of 6th yr = 4 + x+x+x+x+x+x = 4+6x
height at the end of 4th yr = 4 + x+x+x+x = 4+4x
height at the end of 6th yr = height at the end of 4th yr + 1/5(height at the end of 4th yr) = (4+4x) + 1/5 (4+4x)

solve it, x = 2/3
