If set consists of the nos 1,5,-2,8 and n, is 0<n<7?
1) The median of the nos in S is less than 5.
2) The median of the nos in S greater than 1.


Please explain.

The number of digits in the set are odd so the median is going to be the middle number.

Statement 1 If the median is less than 5 means n's value be toward the left side of 5 otherwise 5 will become the median. So sufficient to answer.

Statement 2 Median is greater than 1 means n can be any value above 1 but no indication of it being less than 7. Thus insufficient.

Given set S = {-2, 1, 5, 8, n}

S1: Median < 5 

If n = 9, then median = 5 not less than 5. 
If n = -7, then median = 1, is less than 5.
Not sufficient.

S2: Median > 1 
If n = 1, median= 1, not greater than 1
If n = 9, median = 5, greater than 1
Not sufficient.

S1 & S2: 1 < Median < 5 
Only way this can happen is when n = 2, 3, 4

Therefore this is sufficient.

If set consists of the nos 1,5,-2,8 and n, is 01. This means n can be placed in the 3rd-5th position, and it is >1. Again this means it could be smaller than, equal to, or greater than 7. Insufficient.
Combined of course we get 1<n<5. Which means it must be true that 0<n<7. Sufficient.
