The question asks is n between 0<n<7

St1: median is less than 5

n could be any value less than 5 - insuff

St2: median is greater than 1

n could be any value greater than 1 - insuff

together,

1<n<5---> satisfies the condition

C.

1)median <5, so n could be -1, or n could be 2,3,4 so not suff
2)median >1, so n could be 6, or n could be 100 so not suff
combined:
median =n, suff

Going with C on this,
Q : Is 0 < n < 7?

Given set S = {-2, 1, 5, 8, n}

S1: Median < 5

If n = 9, then median = 5 not less than 5.
If n = -7, then median = 1, is less than 5.
Not sufficient.

S2: Median > 1
If n = 1, median= 1, not greater than 1
If n = 9, median = 5, greater than 1
Not sufficient.

S1 & S2: 1 < Median < 5
Only way this can happen is when n = 2, 3, 4

Therefore this is sufficient.

1) Let n be 10 then median is 5.
Let n be 4 then median is 4
Not suff
2) let n = -1 then median is 1
Not Suff

Both

1<median<5

Only when n < 7 and > 0

Not Suff

Both

1<median<5

Only when n < 7 and > 0

when n=-1 the median is 1,but this fails the statement as it is given median>1
hence,n cannot be -1,and n should be greater than 1.
if n=2,median is 2,yes
if n=3,median is 3,yes
if n=4,median is 4,yes
if n=5,median is 5,yes
if n=6,median is 5,yes
if n=7,median is 5,yes
if n=8 or >8 median is 5,yes

hence,the answer is B:)

[quote="amansingla4"]If set consists of the nos 1,5,-2,8 and n, is 01. This means n can be placed in the 3rd-5th position, and it is >1. Again this means it could be smaller than, equal to, or greater than 7. Insufficient.
Combined of course we get 1<n<5. Which means it must be true that 0<n<7. Sufficient.
