Given:

X > 8
x < 17
X < 14
What is the range of the possible values of x?

ignore x<17. b/c x<14.

8<x<14.

8,9,10,11,12,13 which equal 6 numbers or just

14-8 =6.

8 < x < 14

Range = 14-8 = 6 :)

Fig,

Since x is grater than 6 but smaller than 14 exclusive (i.e. x is not equal to neither 6 nor 14), is not the range smaller than 6?

I mean the range cannot be 6.

I understand your point :)... Nothing says us that x is an integer... So, How could we define the range ?

I mean there are an endless serie of real numbers just above 8 and the same just below 14, each number making a different value to the range. :)

agreed.

there are infinite possibilities of range but no mattter the values of x, range is always smaller than 6.

if x were between 8 and 14 inclusive, the range would be 6.

But we need a range... I stay with 6 :)

I just used number line.

And I think range is less than 6, it become obvious if you use numberline
Let`s take, just as an example:

max X= 13,999 and min X= 8,001

Range=max - min = 13,999 - 8,001 = 5, 998.........

so range is less than 6.

...? :)

Range is less than 6. Unless we know the maximum and minimum values of x, I can only say range < 6.

(Note: Number of elements in a range should not be confused with range. You can have an infinite number of elements in the range 8 < x < 14, for instnace, 8.01,8.02,8.03.......13.97,13.98,13.99,13.99,13.991...., but range is always maximum - minimum)
