Right triangle ABC has a height BD, What is the value of AB times BC?

1. AB is equal to 6
2. The product of the non hypotenuse sides is equal to 24

what if BD coincides with BA?


Hmm..you are suggesting that D and A are the same points...I concede it is a very valid point that I totally missed but wonder if I would have let that possibility alter my solution in the actual GMAT. I guess i might have still put my money on B and got it wrong.

Whats the OA, bmwhype2?

just wondering how come this is so. why couldnt B be at the top of the triangle instead of at the right angle.

An assumption that i did not know i had made till ravshonbek pointed it out was that A & D are distinct points. If A & D are distinct points, you will find that if BD is the height of a right angled triangle, the right angle will always be at point B. If it were at any other point ( say A or C ), then BA or BC would be the height and BD would have to coincide with one of them.

yes, i was wondering the same thing. how we would know which is the right angle?
