Alternatively sqrt 18 = sqrt 9*2 = 3*sqrt2 = 3*1.4142 = 4.2426

Amar

lol. you solved for a different number. i said .18 not 18

how can i estimate the value of a sqrt

let say, sqrt .18

Use ones you know, and see which side of it they are, then try out something else according to where your answer comes out.

so 0.18 ... 0.4 x 0.4 = 0.16... so need a bit more - 0.42 x 0.42 is about 0.1764...

So we can guess it's about 0.42-0.425 or so... a little inelegant but you can pretty quickly get to an approximation - if you mean a precise estimate.. I'm not sure

thanks. very helpful

sqrt(0.18) = aqrt (1/100 x 9 x 2 )= 1/10 x 3 x aqrt(2)
= (3 x 1.414)/10 = 0.424 ish

True, but the sqrt of 18 and 0.18 should contain the same numbers, it's merely a matter of determining the decimal's location. It may be easier to determine the sqrt of a an integer than a fraction I suppose and then deduce the proper decimal.

Sorry for the mistake bmwhype2, but I agree with alrussel.

0.18 = 18*10^ -2 , and sqrt of this numbe will be sqrt18 * 10^ -1
