Another question from Gmatprep that I am stuck with:

On the number line, the distance between point A and C is 5 and the distance between point B and point C is 20. Does point C lie between point A and point B?

1. The distance between point A and point B is 25.
2. Point A lies to the left of point B.

Thanks guys!

I get C.

1: B could be -25 or +25

2: C could be to the left of A or to the right of A.

Together I can't come up with a scenario in which C isnt in the middle.

Since A must be to the left and the distance btwn A and B is 25 and distance btwn C and B is 20 and A and C is 5.

C cannot be to the left of A b/c that would make the distance btwn C and B greater than 20.

I bet its E though, but from what I could muster up I got C.

You sound right with C. --> Edit: incorrect.

It can only be (A) because
B---A---C
would mean that B---A is 25 and B---C is 30 and A---C is 5
but B---C or C---B is 20 from the stem of the question so B---A---C is not possible

A----C----B which fits all criteria
A---B is 25 , A--C is 5 and C---B is 20

(B) is insufficient and stated in previous posts

1: B could be -25 or +25 --> B cannot be -25 because then distance BC is 30!

A ------------------- C
C ------------------- A

1. in both cases, B could be of either side of A and C.
2. here also in both cases B could be either side of A and C.

So E.

i forgot the red part.

agree with A.

(1): If ABC is a triangle then BC - AC < AB <BC> suff.

(2): Have to draw a pic here:

case 1

B
|
|
|
|
C

Say length of AC is one |, then in this case the region that AC lies becomes a circle (need some of your imagination here folks). If A is left of B, then AC is always lies outside BC (i.e. the left half circle region)

case 2

B
*
*
*
*
*
C

Case 2 CB is a diagonal with deep slope, running C to B from left to right, bottom to top. In this case AC can lie outside BC or not, A is always left of B no matter what. => insuff.

So answer is A.

Agree with A.

I wasnt sayin the distance could be 25. Distance is always + as you said. I was just thinking that B could be AT -25 on the number line.
