I've finished 14 of the Challenges and I worked through the Kaplan 800 book completely. Here's my advice:

If you're just starting out and aren't far along in your studies yet, buy a book...but not Kaplan. If you buy one book it should be OG11, two books you should start buying MGMAT books, etc.
If you have a solid grounding and are looking for the best way to improve your scores even more, hands down buy the challenges. They're the best practice tool I've come across for the toughest quant problems. After finishing 25 sets of those the quant on the actual GMAT will seem like a cake walk.
