according the formula in the stem, the "boxed 9" and "boxed 6" multiplied together is a normal 81. a "boxed 27" is a normal 81.

This type of question is just gimmicky. It is testing your ability to pay attention rather than actual reasoning skills.

The tricky part to this question is the way the answer choices are presented.

[9] = 27 or [9]=9*3
[6] = 3 or [6]=1/2*6

27*3 = 81. This is not an answer choice they want it in [form]

81 is odd so we can use the formula given to know that [27] = 3*27=81

Thanks for your explanation!
I would never get that from the question because I was reading this in the form of
[9]=3m,
m=3
and[6]=1/2m,
m=12.
