My two cents:

300=(2/3)*(3/5)*Total

Total=750

B

Which is the OA?

Cheers

Of the mutual funds on a “select list,” 1/3 have 5-star ratings, and 2/5 of the remaining funds have 4-star ratings. If the remaining 300 funds on the list have 3-star ratings, how many funds are on the list?

A. 500
B. 750
C. 1,000
D. 1,200
E. 1,500

5/15+6/15 = 11/15

300 = 3/15x thus x = 1500

Shouldn't it be 4/15? Then x is 1125

My post has the steps.
in your steps you make an assumption that 4star funds are two times 5star funds, but it is not given. is it?

No. Let us begin all over again.

If x is total number of funds then x/3 is the number for 5 star. Remaining is (x-x/3) = 2x/3.

numer of 4 start funds is 2/5 of the remaining 2x/5 and hence (2x/3)*2/5 is the number for 4 star.

Hope, this clarifies.

A. 500
B. 750
C. 1,000
D. 1,200
E. 1,500

Let X are the total funds, then (1/3)x + (2/3)*(2/5)*x are the 5-star and 4-star funds

x- (1/3)x + (2/3)*(2/5)*x = 300

(9/15) X = 300 and X = 750
ans is "B"

Same answer here (B) for me ! only 2/3*3/5 = 300/x and x=750
