All of the members of club Y are either Democrats or Republicans. If 21of the male members and 53of the female members are Democrats, what is the ratio of the number of males to the number of females in the club?

(1) In club Y the number of female members is one less than the number of male members. 
(2) In club Y the number of male Republican members is equal to the number of female Democratic members.

A is insufficient because it only give you a relationship between the total no. of males and females without giving any numbers


B alone is insufficient because it gives you no idea how many female republicans thre would be


A and B together give number of republican males (53) and a relationship between the total number of males and females which enables you to calculate the ratio of males:females

janice, thats a good DS problem. as far as explaning the OA - B, i can say that since Male Reps = Female Dem -> Male Reps = 53; 

Male Dems + Male REps = 21+53 = 74 -> ratio of male to female is 74/53 which will only make sense if there are no Female Reps, who are not mentioned anywhere in the stem. does anyone else have an explanation of B??

the first sentence in the stem reads - in club Y all the members are either Dems or REps. then there are the figures for the M/F distribution of Dems. there is no mentioning that there HAVE to be female REps , hence B suggests that it could be theanswer. althought it is not a very convincing one it is a possibility. too bad, so is C. MA i see what you're saying. I think this question needs more info. janice where did you get it from ??

I made a mistake in the post,the question should be: All of the members of club Y are either Democrats or Republicans. If 1/2 of the male members and 3/5 of the female members are Democrats, what is the ratio of the number of males to the number of females in the club? (1) In club Y the number of female members is one less than the number of male members. (2) In club Y the number of male Republican members is equal to the number of female Democratic members. OA is B.Please check out my reasoning and correct me if IÂ´m wrong: MD:male democrats FD:female democrats MR:male republicans FR:female republicans MD=M/2 MR=M/2 FD=3/5F FR=2/5F MR=FD M/2=3F/5.From here I got: M=6F/5 Then the ratio is: M/F OR (6F/5)/F= 6/5 .
