If x is a two-digit integer and the ratio of its units digit

Question

If x is a two-digit integer and the ratio of its units digit to its tens digit is 2 to 1, what is the value of x ?

a) The units digit of x is 4 more than its tens digit.
b) The product of the two digits in x is 32.

How come stmt 2 is valid over here?...

Let the integer be 10x+y and also given that y/x=2/1--> y=2x

stmt 2:

xy=32

x(2x)=32

2 x^2 =32

x^2 =16

x=+-4

--> y can be +-8

so the number can be 48 or -48. Please correct me if i am wrong. So the digits can never be negative?...

Hi gabriel87

Digit in arithmetic is a numeral that can be combined with others to write larger numbers, and that cannot itself be split into other numerals.
So even when the number is negative it's digits are always positive

Even though it's true that the digits are always positive, the number in itself can be negative, can't it?

Hi gabriel87, Sure the number as a whole can be negitive, but here we are talking about the ratio between the digits of the number which are always positive :-D
