If the ratio of integers a, b, and c is 1 : 3 : 5, what is the value of a + c?
(1) c – a = 12
(2) b – a = 6
(1) c – a = 12
(2) b – a = 6

Given, a : b : c = 1 : 3 : 5
--> Values of a, b & c are k, 3k & 5k respectively for any value 'k'
c + a = 5k + k = 6k
(1) c – a = 12
--> 5k - k = 12
--> 4k = 12
--> k = 3
So, c + a = 6k = 6*3 = 18 --> Sufficient
(2) b – a = 6
--> 3k - k = 6
--> 2k = 6
--> k = 3
So, c + a = 6k = 6*3 = 18 --> Sufficient
IMO Option D

Since the ratio is given to be 1:3:5, let's say the numbers are x , 3x and 5x ....as x varies the values will vary in the same ratio. So we need to find x first.
Data A says c-a=12.. which means 5x-x=12. That gives you x as 3. From this we get the numbers as 3, 9 and 15. We can find a+c=18
From the second data b-a=6 we again get3x-x=6 or x=3. So we get the same numbers 3,9,15 for a,b and c. So a+c=18 ..since both the data answer the questions independently the answer is D
