STmt 1: points to be awarded are 1,2,3,4,5, ie, total of 15 points. This stmt says that no team won more than 6, So 2 teams can get max of 6 points, and still we will have 3 points left which must have gone to third team. Sufficient.

Stmt 2: No two teammates finished in consecutive places, ie, no two team members got consecutive points.
It can be that Team A got 1,3, and 5 points, and B got 2 and 4 points and C got nothing. 
It can also be that A, B and C got 1,2 and 3 points respectively. So stmt 2 is insufficient.

There is a risk of carrying over information given in option 1 while solving option 2. like i did, and concluded that B is sufficient !

here is how I did it.

if you take A while solving B, you think oh 1-3 * 2-4 * so 5th can be taken by thrid team. but there is no restriction if you take B alone, so it could be 1-3-5 and 2-4

I interpreted the question in a diff way

It says that there a 3 team and 3 runners in each team. So in all 9 runners

Now the scoring techniques

points = 6-n and 1<= n<=5

So i interpreted it as out of the 9 runner completing the exam only the first 5 would be scored and rest would get 0

So for statement 2 where we have that no two team member secure consecutive position then the worst score can be

9th postion- o
7th position - 0
5th position- 1
So atleast 1 point

Hence,sufficient

and the answer should be D.

Can anyone pls clarify this. Am I not understanding the question well.

You are right almost till the end but you missed one point.

Note this:
(2) No pair of teammates finished in consecutive places  among the top five places

So they could have been in consecutive places in the last 3 spots - 9th, 8th and 7th - and the team would have got a total of 0 points in that case.
