In each of the first three quarters of 2006, the number of computers sold by Megabits was between 35% and 40% higher than the number sold by Megabits in same quarter in 2005. Did Megabits sell more computers in 2006 than it did in 2005?

Let A,B,C,D be the sales of each quarter A = Q1 B = Q2 C = Q3 and D = Q4.

S = A+B+C+D

statement I

1.35A+1.35B+1.35C+ X > A+B+C+D

0.35(A+B+C)+ X > D

since D is smaller then A,B,C and X cannot be less then zero.

0.35(A+B+C) + (X-D) > 0

has to be true !!!

2. insuff because, we need qunatity of computers in 4th quarter to see whether it was high or low than other three quarters.

what is meant here is may be in last quarter of 2005 10 times more or even 1000 times more computers sold than 3 other quarters combined, where 97 percent of it could be not enough to compensate that 10 or 1000 times largeness of last quarters sales.

It's wrong to say you don't know nothing about 2006 - Q4 lets assume 2005 Q1 = 100 2005 Q2 = 100 2005 Q3 = 100 2005 Q4 = 99 ----> has to be less then (Q1, Q2 or Q3) 2006 Q1 = 135 ---> (could be 140) 2006 Q2 = 135 2006 Q3 = 135 2006 Q4 = X ----> One can assume thta we know nothing about 2006 Q4 - but we know that this number has to be greater then zero !!! why is that important ? Since 135*3+X > 100*3+99 ---> we need to figure out 105+X > 99 6+X >0 Even if you choose for 2006 Q4 the minimum possible value (i.e. zero) this equation will still be valid !!! hence sufficient. you can choose larger value for X, but it will always stay valid !! henec the answer is (A) Nice question, I dont think this is GMAT style question.

You can figure this out just by thinking about it. No need for computations.

Essentially the first 3 quarters of 2006 are 35-45% higher than the first 3 of 2005..
We want to know what the 4th quarter is.

B/f approaching the probs. just think that the first 3 could be 100 for 05, so about 135 for 06. However 4th quarter could be 0 for 06 and 10000000000000000000 for 05. We just don't know.

A: Since the 4th quarter is the least and we know that the other 3 quarters are greater, the other 3 quarters in 06 must also be greater than the 4th in 05. So 06>05.

Suff.

B: tempting to say suff. lets say the # is 98%. well 98% of what? 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000???? or 100?

We just don't know so this is insuff.

lets get back to our lovely DS question 1. found to be suff. 2. we know that first three quarters sales in 2006 is greater than first three quarters sales in 2005 now 2. says that number of comps sold in the last quarter of 2006 is more than 97% of the number sold in the last quarter of 2005. 2005---->100+100+100+200=500 2006----> 135+135+140+ 190 =600 or 2005---->100+100+100+50 =350 2006---->135+135+140+ 49 =459 or 2005---->100+100+100+150=450 2006---->135+135+140+ 150 =560 I think with any other combiations the statement is suff. so D. Gmat doesnt reward ones who change answers very often and wait for a tip off. but we have to do so in a learning mode. please do explain ur views without agreeing on the results or if u have rebuttal that's better.
