It seems to me very unlikely that such a question could appear on the test. I think this question is beyond the GMAT scope

Guys this is the exact question I encountered today in the GMAT test.. it was the 7th or 8th problem and it completely shook my confidence and the results said it all .... 47 on Quant...

The answer choices: km; km + 1; dont remember the rest but of a similar format!

Also, had 2 tough Geometry questions ... wish I could draw it out for you! The rest were all standard but I came under such heavy time pressure that I had to guess on the last 4... of course, I am slower than the slowest of all GMAT test takers but still am quite shattered

Are you sure it was "+"s inside the () ?
If it was a "*" the answer would be t=m+k+1...

If you remember the question correctly then indeed.. Ugly one

Agree with Dookie. Inside the brackets should be "*", not "+". The problem is now much more simple and quickly doable (and withing the GMAT scope).
(4.6 * 10^m) (2.3 * 10^k) = 1.058 * 10^t
= 10.58 * 10^(m+k) = 1.058 * 10^(m+k+1)
t is then equal to m+k+1

(4.6 + 10^m) (2.3 + 10^k) = 1.058 * 10^t

Express 't' in terms of k and m.

:x

(4.6 + 10^m) (2.3 + 10^k) = 1.058 * 10^t

Do yu also remember the answers given .... or if they were complex expressions ...

The answer will be t = k+m+1

When any terms with same base are multiplied then the power gets added. As the decimal place has been shifted to left side after mupliplication, So now the total power of 10 will be increased by 1 after addition of k and m.
