On a table, there is a container with some golf balls inside. A boy comes along and tries to divide the golf balls into bags of 16 and he finds that he has 12 golf balls extra. He then tries to divide the original number of gold balls into bags of 17 and he finds that he is 13 golf balls short. How many golf balls are there in the container in the first place?

However, when i solved this question, i didn't take for granted that we are talking about the same number of bags in both cases.
That's what you did venksune when you wrote "X= no. of bags ".
That's how i solved it.
16K + 12 = X.
16K + K -13 = X
Solved and got K=25, X=412.
The reason for 16K + K -13 = X
Is that It's like puting 16 balls in K different bags and then just adding one ball to each of those bags.
Anyway, our equations end up the same... So your assumption seems correct i guess. It wasn't trivial to me at first
