The two legs of a right triangle are a and a - d, and the hypotenuse is a + d. In terms of a, what is the value of d?

 Just do the math, you don't need to know the answer. Please help out though.

a^2 + (a-d)^2 = (a+d)^2

d = a/4

so we get: a^2+ a^2-2ad+d^2 = a^2+2ad+d^2 we get a^2=4ad or a = 4d or d=a/4 Hm... not really impossible :wink:

my way is

1. ---pick the number 3, 4, 5 each of which is the side of a right triangle.

2. ---a= 4, a-d= 3 thus a+d = 5

3. --- that mean d=1

4. ---  the relationship between a and d is a/4 = d
