just came across this question in OG13 and I thought answer should be A

Let Total paid be T
so 39.05<T<40.83. So it fits "inside" A, 40<T<42 so to speak.
B states that 39<T<41, which works for the right hand side of T but not for the left. (E.g. if T is 39.01, then tip is only 9.89% of 35.50 - less than 10% requirement in the question)

The total amount paid was between 35.5*1.1=39.05 and 35.5*1.15=~41. Only option which covers all possible values of the meal is B.

A meal cost $ 35.50 adn there was no tax. If the tip was more than 10 pc but less than 15pc of the price, then the total amount paid should be:

A. 40-42
B. 39-41
C. 38-40
D. 37-39
E. 36-37

We can determine the lower end and the upper end of the meal cost plus the tip. The lower end is the meal cost plus 10% tip:

35.50 + 0.1(35.50) = 35.50 + 3.55 = $39.05

The upper end is the meal cost plus 15% tip:

35.50 + 0.15(35.50) = 35.50 + 5.33 = $40.83

Thus, the total amount paid is between $39 and $41.

Answer: B

Given:
Cost of the meal = $35.50

Let's calculate the range of the tip amount:
Minimum tip (10% of the cost of the meal) = 0.10 * $35.50 = $3.55
Maximum tip (15% of the cost of the meal) = 0.15 * $35.50 = $5.33

Now, we'll calculate the range of the total amount paid by adding the cost of the meal to the minimum and maximum tip amounts:
Minimum total amount paid = $35.50 + $3.55 = $39.05
Maximum total amount paid = $35.50 + $5.33 = $40.83

Therefore, the total amount paid must have been between $39.05 and $40.83, which corresponds to option (B) in the given choices.

if we observe the AOs, 1 will notice all options are distinct - no overlap. this means, we can only focus of ensuring tht we find the exact value of 10% of 35.50 = 3.550 , followed by addition of the tip to the og amount = 35.50+3.550 = 39.050. only Option B starts with 39 so we do not need to go any further from here (and calculate 15% of 35.50 , add tip to 35.50). Observing the answer options before jumping to solve has been a standard suggestion i have observed , and it seems to work!.
