The time from beginning of March to the end of September is 7 months.
If x is the average monthly tip for all months other than August then his August month tip will be 3*x
His total tip for the 7 months = 6*(average tip for the months other than August) + 3x
=9x
August tips as a fraction of total tips = 3x/9x =1/3. So A

First notice the number of months for which he worked - March to Sept i.e. 7 months
Avg of monthly totals in tips for months other than August = x
Tips in August = 3x
Total tips for all months = 6*x + 3x = 9x
Tips for August/Total tips for all months = 3x/9x = 1/3
