A car traveling at 40 m/s (144 km/h) passes a police car hidden behind a billboard. Two seconds after the car passes the billboard the police car is on the road accelerating at 3.0 m/s squared. Approximately how many seconds will it take the police to catch the speeder?

A. 13
B. 14
C. 15
D. 17
E. 23


Let t be the time for the police catch the car, t is counted from when the police sets off.
we have:
40m/s* 2s + Vcar*t= 1/2 a*t^2+ Upolice*t ( U police is the initial velocity of the police, in this case, it is 0) ....from this equation, you can calculate t . ^_^

C.15 for me

You know that the police car waited 2 seconds before chasing the car so there is a gap of 2*40m/s = 80m

let's call X the number of seconds
40X+80=3X^2

shame on me cuz I could'nt simplify so I just plug in the numbers.
with 15 you can find the car will have done 680 miles and the police car 675
