Why is this E instead of A?
We're told 1 bushel of wheat generates one-third the profit of a bushel of corn: W = C/3; a bushel of corn generates five-fourths the profit of a bushel of truffles: C = 5T/4.

The question asks for the fraction of the profit from a bushel of wheat is the profit from a bushel of truffles. In other words, for what value W has to be multiplied to be the profit from a bushel of truffles. Let x be the multiplier, so T=Wx

If we solve for C in terms of W, we know that C = 3W:

C=C -> 3W = 5T/4 -> 4*3W = 5T -> 12W = 5T -> T= W(12/5). So the multiplier, or the fraction, is 12/5 (E).

Let's understand this better,

Solution:
Let the profit from a bushel of truffles = T.
A bushel of corn generates 5/4 of T, so profit from corn = (5/4)T.
A bushel of wheat generates 1/3 of the profit from corn, so profit from wheat = (1/3) × (5/4)T = 5/12 T.
The question asks: profit from truffles as a fraction of profit from wheat = T ÷ (5/12 T) = 12/5.

So the correct answer is:- (E), 12/5

A certain bushel of wheat generates one-third the profit of a bushel of corn. If a bushel of corn generates five-fourths the profit of a bushel of truffles, what fraction of the profit from a bushel of wheat is the profit from a bushel of truffles?

A. 5/12
B. 4/5
C. 5/4
D. 5/3
E. 12/5

One could also pick easy numbers

T \(=36\), then C\( = 45\) and W \(= 15\)

Required Fraction = \(\frac{36}{15}\\
\) = \(\frac{12}{5} \)

Ans E

Corn Profit= (5/4) Truffle Profit
C= (5/4)T
Wheat Profit= (1/3) Corn Profit = (1/3)C= (1/3)(5/4)T = (5/12)T

Required Fraction = Profit from Truffles/Profit from Wheat = T/(5/12)T = 12/5
