.75(200+x)=120+x
150+.75x=120+x
30=.25x
x=120.

Foreign currency, and servants to boot!

Answer is 120.. and i guess..stoolfi's method was quite easy and understandable.....
wonder_gmat.....try to give your way of solving the problem ..so that others can get diff/easy way of solutions.

How I did it:

Monthly salary should turn out to be the same in both cases otherwise we'd be fleecing the servant! :shock: So let's be fair and do the following:
x = price of the shirt

(200 + x) / 12 = (120 + x) / 9
600 + 3x = 480 + 4x
x = 120

Fair and square. No decimals, no long calculations. I think the hardest part is to acknowledge that fact that monthly salary would be the same in both cases and price of the shirt should be included when counting for the annual salary.

I used a proportion:

1/0.75=(200+S)/(120+S)
S=120
