One year payment to the servant is Rs. 200 plus one shirt. The servant leaves after 9 months and recieves Rs. 120 and a shirt. Then find the price of the shirt.

.75(200+x)=120+x
150+.75x=120+x
30=.25x
x=120.

Foreign currency, and servants to boot!

How I did it:

Monthly salary should turn out to be the same in both cases otherwise we'd be fleecing the servant! :shock: So let's be fair and do the following:
x = price of the shirt

(200 + x) / 12 = (120 + x) / 9
600 + 3x = 480 + 4x
x = 120

Fair and square. No decimals, no long calculations. I think the hardest part is to acknowledge that fact that monthly salary would be the same in both cases and price of the shirt should be included when counting for the annual salary.

stoolfi,
Yea, I'm sick of that dude wonder_gmat and shubhangi fighting too. But you know on the second thought I think they're just talking. But thanks for the concern for fellow members! :lol:

I don't show my calculation when I happen to be one of the first ones to answer because I want to give other a chance to work on their own. Buf you guys want the calculation then sure I'll post it. ...well unless I'm in hurry yet eager to post the answer first! :-D 8-)

Hey, wonder_gmat,

I was being sarcastic. The internet, as everyone knows, does not do sarcasm very well...

wonder_gmat,

On another reading, perhaps you, too, were being sarcastic. Aww, crap.

From the Simpsons:
Teen1: Oh, here comes that cannonball guy. He's cool.
Teen2: Are you being sarcastic, dude?
Teen1: I don't even know anymore.

I used a proportion:

1/0.75=(200+S)/(120+S)
S=120
