I'm getting E, but I have a question. The 260,000, is that the amount that Cathrall got from the bank or Leeds.

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but either way I get E.

Just want to make sure we all know that the x here should be what Mr Leed receives, not what the bank paid out.

:shock: :shock: :shock:

got A, bear with me the equation is nasty :roll:

(0.8(2/3(0.75(x - 20) - 15) - 5) -5) + x = 260

simplifies to x = 200k

Mr C -> Mrs C:

3/4(x - 20) = 3/4(180) = 135

Mrs C -> Mr L:

2/3(135 - 15) = 80

EDIT: i took what he recieves to mean what he originally gets from the bank and what he gets back at the end.

A bank transfers a sum of money to Mr. Cathrall, who spends $20,000 of the amount sent to him and transfers 75% of the the money remaining to Mrs. Carlyle, who spends $15,000 of the amount she receives it before transferring 2/3 of the money remaining to Mr. Leeds, who spends $5,000 and transfers 4/5 of the money remaining back to Mr. Cathrall. Assuming that the bank transfers were made at no cost, how much money did Mrs. Carlyle transfer to Mr. Leeds if Mr. Cathrall received $260,000 in all?

(A) $80,000 (B) $90,000 (C) $100,000 (D) $110,000 (E) none of the above
