Given: A milkman bought 15 litres of milk and mixed it with 3 litres of mineral water (which is not free). He claims to his customers, who do not know about mixing, that he is making a profit of 10% only. However, his actual profit is 20%.
Asked: What is the ratio of the cost of milk/litre and water/litre?
Let the cost of milk/litre and water/litre be k and cost of water/litre be x.
Cost of milk/litre = kx
Cost of mixture = (15*kx + 3*x)/18
Selling price after 20% profit = 1.2*(15kx + 3x)/18 = .2x(5k+1)
Selling price after 10% profit = 1.1kx
1.1kx = .2x(5k+1)
11k = 2(5k+1) = 10k + 2
k = 2
