This question can actually be solved with just a bit of 'brute force' Arithmetic. If you 'halve' a digit and end up with another digit, then there are only a handful of possibilities to consider:
8 --> 4
6 --> 3
4 --> 2
2 --> 1
0 --> 0
Consider how 'big' most of the answers are, it's highly likely that the first digit of 'G' is an 8 (and the first digit of 'H' would be a 4). At this point, the total is at least 120. With just a little experimentation, you can get to the correct answer.
