On the GMAT Focus Official Practice Exam, the following question appears: On the number line shown, the tick marks are equally spaced and the coordinates of points F and G are 3^11 and 3^12, respectively. Which of the following points has the coordinate -(3^12) ?
A. A B. B C. C D. D E. E This is how I solved the problem:

Therefore, the distance between each tick is 3^11 * 2. To find the number of ticks to get from F (3^11) to the tick with -(3^12), I used the following equation with the variable x representing the number of ticks:
Looking up the problem, it appears that the answer is correct. However, the solutions I'm stumbling upon use a variety of other methods to arrive at this answer, and none of them quite match up with my method. Just to make sure, is this a valid way to solve this problem? Or is there a mistake and I just happened to stumble upon the correct answer out of pure luck? For example, can 3^11 - (3^11 * 2)*x really be simplified to 3^11 * (1-2x), or does this not work because it's actually 3^11 - (3^11*x * 2x)? Thank you for your time and consideration.

You are wrong on ‘because it's actually 3^11 - (3^11*x * 2x)’. 3^11-(3^11*2)*x = 3^11-3^11*2x = 3^11(1-2x)
