Hello Andrey2010

what I meant when argueing that this isn't a GMAT question:

1. You have two questions here 1. What is the volume of wood 2. What is the capacity of the box.

2. You have a lot of calculation - two much for 2 minutes.

3. This is very brute force type of question - not very elegant, you can see in OG that the GMAT is much more elegant.

4. You don't have any choices - is this DS or PS ?

Thank you for your solution - I see this is your first post - so I want to welcome you to the GMATCLUB - welcome !

A cuboidal box whose external dimensions including the lid are 32 dm, 27 dm, 12 dm is made of wood 1 dm thick. What is the capacity of the box and what is the volume of wood used in it ?

Capacity = 30 x 25 x 15 = 750 x 10 = 7500
Voume of box = 32 x 27 x 12 =12 (30 +2)(30 -3)=12 (900 - 30 - 6)=12 x 864

Volume of wood = difference

I think Andrey2010 is right.

But can we solve this problem like this ?

Dimensions = 32*27*12

We only need the "inside" of the cubidal - meaning (32-2)*(27-2)*(12-2) = 7,500

this way we will get Andrey2010 solution faster.

whats the OA ?

7500 cu m and 2868 cu m

Andrey, can you explain why did you use 10 and 25 instead of 12 and 27 in your calculation for volume of wood?

we have to deduct 2 from 12 and 2 from 27 because the thickness of the wood mustn't be included?
