New press:
300000 cards in 12 hours -> 25000 cards/hr

Old Press:
300000 cards in 18 hours -> 50000/3 cards/hr

Together, they make 125000/3 cards per hour. 300,000 cards will take 300000 * 3/125000 = 7.5 hours.

To simplify, you can make 300000 = a. Then, Machine1 takes 12 hs and Machine2 18. In one hour working together they print

a/12 + a/18 = 5a/36. Then, in 36/5 hs will print a. 36/5 = 7.2 hs.

A printing press can print 300,000 cards in 12 hours. An older printing press requires 18 hours to print 300,000. How long would it take for both to print 300,000 together.

I new to Work Problems and would like to know what your strategy is for solving this.

thanks

Because it is the same 300,000 card, you can simply use the combined work formula.

1/A + 1/B = 1/T = 1/12 + 1/18 = 5/36
T = 36/5 =7.2
