25 players on a baseball team are supposed to bring their caps and gloves to each game. At the first game of the season, 22 players brought their caps and 18 brought their gloves. If 6 players brought their caps but not their gloves, how many players brought neither cap nor glove to the first game?
PR recommends to solve this with a table, but I hate tables because they take too much time, space, and generally feel gimicky. What is the proper mathematical way to solve this question?

Great, thanks. These are precisely the kind of "easy" questions I get stuck on. I'm far more comfortable with geometry, rates, percentages, etc, but the kinds of questions with multiple stages, that require repetitive steps, always trip me up.
