1. Area PRTV = 81
Length PR = RT = 9 [sqrt 81]

You are given

4*areaXTSU = areaPQXW
4*ST*SX = QX*PW
2ST*2SX = QX*PW
We know it is a square
2ST = QX

Also QX = RS
RS = 2ST

We know RT = 9. Thus, RS = 6 and ST = 3.

Answer is C.

Hope this is easy to understand.

2. Assume, width of picture (without border) = w.
Length of picture (without border) = l = 2w
Area of picture (without border) = 2w*w

Based on the above,

width of picture (incl border) = w+4 [2 inches on each side]
length of picture (incl border) = 2w+4
Area of picture (incl border) = (w+4)(2w+4)

We can get the area of the border by subtracting the area of the total picture (incl border) from area of picture (without border). This is given to be 196.

Setting up the above equation to get the length of the border:
(w+4)(2w+4) - 2w^2 = 196
2w^2 + 12w + 16 - 2w^2 = 196
12w = 180. w = 15.

Length = 2w = 2*15 = 30.

Answer is C.
