When the question says "there were no tie"
does it mean that no two had the same number of point? or no two athletes arrived at the same time?

isn't it the same???

(6-n) assume 2 finished in the 3rd place(n=3)

i think two teams can have 6 points each.
I don't know why I first though this couldn't be the case...

I've got troubles to answer some of the gmat prep questions. The solutions will be appreciated with kudos :) . Thanks for the help :)

assume teams a,b,c to minimize points for c maximize those of a,b

max points a can get is =<6

if we assumed they earned the first place = 5 points, and they have earned the 5 th place = 1 point

for team b

2 nd place = 4, 4th place = 2 ie: total of 6 points

now for c ( 1,2,5,4 places are taken) then c is left with 3rd place ...total points = 3

so yezz is 3 is the least possible score a team can score ? I did not get the point sorry :(

I did not understand two points ;

1) question says 3 teams were allowed to enter with 3 members but there is only 5 available . It has confused my mind.
2)Why 1 is not the answer(the least possible score) ? If it is possible '' they have earned the 5 th place = 1 point

I did not understand two points ;

1) question says 3 teams were allowed to enter with 3 members but there is only 5 available . 3 from each team however we have 2 constraints a) only 5 from all teams can win (1<=n<=5) b) the max points any team can get is 62)Why 1 is not the answer(the least possible score) ? If it is possible '' they have earned the 5 th place = 1 point
if the 3rd team won the 5th place only ( no other winners from the same team) then it would be a must that one of the other teams a,b would get more than 6 points which is a constraint proided in the given.

Hope this helps

1 2 3 points
a 1 5 5+1 = 6
b 2 4 4+2 =6
c 3 position 3

Bottom line is two teams get max points for the 3rd one to have min points = 3.
