Toledo and Cincinnati are 200 miles apart. A car leaves Toledo traveling toward Cincinnati, and another car leaves Cincinnati at the same time, traveling toward Toledo. The car leaving Toledo averages 15 mph faster than the other, and they meet after 1 hour and 36 minutes. What are the rates of the car?
(x+x+15)(1.6)=200
(2x+15)(1.6)=200
3.2x+24=200
3.2x=176
x=55 mph
x+15=70 mph
i really dont understand how did they add x+x+15 why did they add both the speeds can anybody please explain this in detail this is my fist post here ..if this is already discussed then can someone please direct me to the link....

Both car meet at one point and they started from opposite ends so Total distance travel by both car = 200 miles
Lets say distance travel by car from Cincinnati to Toledo is D1 and speed of that car is X mph
that makes speed of that car traveling from Toledo to Cincinnati X+15 mph , lets say it cover distance D2 in 1 hour and 36 mins.
so we now have D1+D2 = 200 miles
and
D1 = x *1.6 (distance = speed * time)
D2= (x+15) *1.6
so we have x*1.6 + (x+15)*1.6 = 200 ---> (x+x+15) *1.6 = 200
I hope now this will help you understand

sorry for my ignorance....
but total distance travelled by the car that started from toeldo to cinn is 200 and also the same is the case with the car that travelled from the other destination too
then how is that d1 +d2 is 200 not 400...so i got confused there......please explain
