Hi. Need-based scholarships are more rare in the mba world. However I am pretty sure for finaid you will have to declare the family income.

However, need based aid is more exotic than merit. AFAIK, Only HBS has need based scholarships and even that they ask you to pay back if you can since it is funded by alums.

Are there many other schools who have need based scholarships? State schools?

95% of all scholarships I see are merit based and the FAFSA is mostly for determining what you can qualify for for Federal loans… am I off?

Hello,

While need-based scholarships are uncommon in the MBA world, it's important to note that financial aid typically requires disclosure of family income. Need-based aid is more elusive compared to merit-based aid, with Harvard Business School (HBS) being one of the few offering such scholarships. However, it's worth mentioning that even HBS may expect recipients to contribute, as these scholarships are often alumni-funded.

In contrast, the majority of scholarships, around 95%, are merit-based. When it comes to financial aid, completing the FAFSA is crucial, as it helps determine eligibility for federal loans. State schools may have their own financial aid programs, but need-based scholarships remain relatively rare in comparison to merit-based options.

In light of this, we recommend individuals explore various merit-based scholarships available, keeping in mind that need-based aid opportunities are limited, with HBS being a notable exception. Additionally, understanding and completing the FAFSA is essential for determining federal loan eligibility. If you have any queries regarding MBA funding, drop us your query on GMAT Club here.
