Verbal score: Is it possible?

Hi guys, I just finished a cat from 800score and I have a doubt.

In the verbal section I had right 30/41 but I scored 33. even if I did not respond correctly on the first three questions it seems to me a quite poor score, what do you think?

Dear Downunder87 , I'm happy to respond.

First of all, remember that, on the real GMAT, the scoring involves Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT). This means, how many you got right or wrong is virtually irrelevant --- what matters is the difficulty level of each question you got right or wrong. Two different people could get the same number of questions right and wrong, and have entirely different scaled scores in the section. If you are getting mostly easy & medium questions, and getting some right & some wrong, that will be a much lower score than if you get to the hard questions and are getting only the hardest questions wrong. The ratio 30 out of 41 is entirely meaningless ---- what matters is the difficulty level of each question. I cannot speak to that. Let's pretend the scaled score of 33 is reasonably accurate. That's approximately the 67th percentile in Verbal. That's better than 2/3 of people who take the test, so in that sense, it's not bad, but of course, it's not an elite score. To improve your verbal, I would strongly suggest: develop a habit of reading. Read every day, at least an hour a day. Read hard challenging material. Read the Wall Street Journal every day and the Economist magazine cover to cover every week: you should be reading those anyway to prepare for your MBA.
