Hey everyone,
One last question before I take my test.
The pronoun must match the antecedent In number. So how would you write this:
The revenue of Goldman is higher than those of its competitors.
Would it just be that of? I just assumed it was those because there are multiple revenues (one for each firm)
(This is from dealbook, which has a sentence that says: "And Goldman’s advisory business is likely to exceed $8 billion in net revenue this year, exceeding by more than one-third those of its nearest competitors, JPMorgan Chase and Morgan Stanley.")
If, indeed, it is that, would this sentwnce work? The revenue of Goldman is higher than its competitors'
This is based on a question from gmatprep about dinosaur metabolism. I'm also curious if "Some scientists contend that many species of dinosaurs had metabolisms more like warm-blooded mammals' than cold-blooded reptiles'" works.
For reference, a mgmat instructor said the following would be NOT ok:
Some scientists contend that the metabolisms of many species of dinosaurs were more more like a warm-blooded mammal’s than a cold-blooded reptile’s.
(And that just sounds wrong).

No expert...but a quick reply
It is in correct. Here you are comparing comparing revenue of Goldman and others, and revenue is singular so you can use that or repeat the the word which is compared.
The revenue of Goldman is higher than that of its competitors
or
The revenue of Goldman is higher than the revenue of its competitors
Where did you come across this??I am quite certain it is not a GMAT Material
I am sorry but this doesn't work and the MGMAT instructor is spot on.
This is absolutely correct and has parallel structure. It is one of the ways by which you can make the sentence parallel.Note that possessive should be used correctly.
Other option
Some scientists contend that the metabolisms of many species of dinosaurs were more more like those of warm-blooded mammals than those of cold-blooded reptile.
This makes that sentence a bit awkard and wordy but is correct.
It will do you no harm to just keep in mind that pronoun should refer to only antecedent(Antecedent must exisit), Pronoun should agree in number with antecedent and Pronoun and Antcedent should make sense.

Thank you for the response. I have a few follow ups. Your responses make sense, and yes Dealbook is just a website about financial news, not gmat...

The only thing different between the two is the opening structure, but the rest is the same...Both of these sentences imply multiple metabolisms, which would be crazy.
I think I'm overanalyzing, and the gmat will be more clear on what it wants using the rest of the sentence.
