Hi,

Came across this para in an Article on Nytimes:
 "But the mayor, who vacationed in Italy in July, has embraced the role of international lodestar, eager to spread his message of social equity to other nations that he believes, thanks to austerity budgets and economic woes, are newly receptive to his brand of populist liberalism."

But the mayor , who vacationed in Italy in July,  has embraced the role of international lodestar, eager to spread his message of social equity to other nations that he believes , thanks to austerity budgets and economic woes,  are newly receptive to his brand of populist liberalism.

The sentence means that

The Mayor has embraced the role of IL,eager to spread his message to other nations that
he believes are new receptive to his brand of populist liberalism

Now the 2 verbs has embraced and eager does not seem to have been properly connected either as list or 2 verbs independently

I am not sure if this sentence structure is correct

The sentence is difficult to understand because of the placement of modifier "eager to....". If we place this modifier at the beginning of the sentence, then the sentence becomes much clearer.

"Eager to spread his message of social equity to other nations that he believes , thanks to austerity budgets and economic woes,  are newly receptive to his brand of populist liberalism, the mayor, who vacationed in Italy in July, has embraced the role of international lodestar."

"He and His" correctly says about the Mayor. "Eager to..." is modifying the Mayor now clearly.

here  "eager"  is not a verb!!  "eager"  is an adjective 
in a sentence "he is eager" ---->the verb is "is"

SO in a sentence:  But the mayor, who vacationed in Italy in July, has embraced the role of international lodestar, eager to spread his message of social equity to other nations that he believes, thanks to austerity budgets and economic woes, are newly receptive to his brand of populist liberalism.  ---------->the expression " eager to spread his message of social equity to other nations" is adverbial in nature

Don't you think the sentence structure would be much better as pointed out anitesh??
