It would be good if we list up good tips for negating.
(Or am I the only one who often gets confused while negating?
)
1. When there are main clause and sub clause, negate main clause only.
ex) When lawmakers establish income tax rates in order to generate a certain level of revenue, they do not allow adequately for revenue that will be lost through evasion.
(Negated) When lawmakers establish income tax rates in order to generate a certain level of revenue, they allow adequately for revenue that will be lost through evasion.
2. The negation of some is none.
ex) This year, some of the new companies starting up will provide substantially more jobs per company than did new companies last yeat.
(Negated) This year, none of the new companies starting up will provide substantially more jobs per company than did new companies last yeat.
3. The negation of some...not is none...not or all.
ex) The claims against at least some underpriced policies do not require paying out all of the premium income from those policies as soon as it is earned.
(Negated) The claims against all underpriced policies require paying out all of the premium income from those policies as soon as it is earned.
4. Some = at least one, (and so be careful when you see 'some', since it could mean just one.)
5. Most = at least majority
6. Majority = more than half
Correct me if I am wrong, add up more tips if you'd like, or ask me to remove this post if this post is against the policy.
